Counter Consensual Climate Change Conference

Successful Counter-Consensual Climate Conference evaluates appropriate responses to global warmingBrussels - At a packed Conference in the European Parliament in Brussels yesterday, a heavy-weight panel of scientists, economists and politicians challenged the current global warming consensus and questioned both the dubious science and the deeply damaging economics of proposed policy measures.

East Midlands Conservative MEP Roger Helmer, who hosted and chaired the event, decided to organise the conference in order to provide a platform for those who had doubts either about the science of climate change, or about the economic relevance of proposed responses, following what he saw as the determination of the global warming lobby to stifle debate and opposition.

Chris Horner, of the Competitive Enterprise Institute in Washington and author of the best-selling book “The Politically Incorrect Guide to Global Warming”, kick-started proceedings by presenting a transatlantic perspective on the issue while the Conference’s key-note speaker, the former British Chancellor of the Exchequer, Lord Lawson of Blaby, delivered a powerful speech calling for a more measured approach and outlining the dangers of massively expensive energy-reduction policies.

Professor David Henderson of the Westminster Business School offered a ‘dual critique’ challenging both the science and the economics of climate change. He saw the global warming scare as part of a larger trend of “global salvationism”, the creation of new supra-national authorities seeking to legitimise themselves by responding to perceived global concerns. He predicted that these could undermine democracy.

Economist Roger Bootle argued that current green tax proposals, on air travel and 4×4s, amounted at best to window-dressing, while at worst they were merely new stealth taxes which would discredit green initiatives with the public. Meantime the economic damage and low growth resulting from aggressive carbon reductions would deny us the funding for future technologies which could reduce our dependence on imported fossil fuels.

Dr Benny Peiser of Liverpool John Moores University, publisher of the CC Net electronic abstract newsletter, discussed the financial and other pressures put on scientists who dare to challenge the alarmist consensus and the current ‘relentless outpouring of apocalyptic disaster scenarios’, while Open Europe’s Neil O’Brien reviewed the think-tank’s critical report on the EU’s Emissions Trading Scheme, remarking that “Only the EU could create an environmental scheme that took millions of pounds from NHS hospitals and gave it to big oil companies”.

The International Policy Network’s Julian Morris pointed to the damage which large-scale carbon reduction measures could do in the third world, denying many millions of poor people access to electricity and basic services, and condemning them to remain in poverty. He argued that money for possibly ineffective measures against climate change would be better used on providing clean water and healthcare in the developing world.

The event was then followed by a screening of the recent Channel 4 film ‘The Great Global Warming Swindle’.

Speaking about how his Conference sat with his Party’s position on green issues, Mr Helmer said:

“David Cameron has given the Party a new focus on the environment. But the Conservative Party is a big tent, with room for nuances in opinion, and for lively and constructive debate. I see my initiative as very much part of the Party’s new emphasis on the environment”.

Mr Helmer has been repeatedly asked if his initiative is funded by industry or pressure groups, and affirmed explicitly that he was personally funding the event, using parliamentary allowances and his personal resources. He has not been offered, or accepted, any other funding.

I was heartened to hear Roger Helmer say that this green agenda is a load of rubbish. I have just about reached the end of the road with David Cameron and his entourage of Tory toffs. I have been a supporter of the conservatives for over 40 years and helped fundraising for the local party. I never thought it would come to this. Even Mrs. T prefers Gordon Brown. DC has made us a laughing stock. Nobody takes him seriously. They just look like a bunch of kids. I do not believe this climate change nonsense - climates have always changed - in the Fifties a series of poor summers were blamed on nuclear bomb tests. All this emission nonsense is just that - the air is cleaner now than ever - no more London smogs, no steel works, no mines, no potteries, no ship-building. Diesel engines are cleaner and life is generally better. Now Dave and his men are trying to deprive us of hard-earned luxuries. If we all went to live in caves it would make not one iota of difference to any climate change, real or imagined. The conservatives are supposed to be the opposition, but we hear no opposition to this appalling government. Stop trying to stop the world Dave - concentrate your efforts on the appalling waste of money and incompetence of this present administration, and then, maybe, Mrs. T will want to see you!

This reminds me of the lobby which up until a few years ago was adamant that smoking does not damage your health.Like proponents of that view I smell a few vested interests here too.Or a few centuries ago some people held desperately to the belief that the earth was flat. There will always be a few loonies/dinosaurs that are unable to accept what has been overwhelmingly accepted by scientific research. It is just highly embarassing that such people should be representatives of our country. No doubt we will look back in all too few years with disbelief that people as late as the first decade of the 21st century could still hold out with such overwhelingly disproven lunatic theories.

Mr Paul -

Have you ever heard of the concept of the “tyranny of the majority”, or studied the history of ancient Athens? It was after all the “Democratic” party that condemned Socrates to death.

The issue of global warming, the “science” (mostly inherently biased, incompetent statistical computer models), the public policy and economics, are far too important to let ourselves be stampeded into draconian measures that may or may not have any impact whatsoever on the planetary climate.

The fact that you have very clearly subscribed to this new dark age religion is your business, but you have no business denying others the democratic right to disagree, and conduct rational debate and argument that opens the way to alternative conclusions.

Final point - if you want to talk about “vested interests”, why don’t you do some research into who created, and funded the “environmentalist” movement througout it’s history, to the present day.

I am in no way denying your democratic right to think anything - I am quite happy for you to think anything you like.

“far too important to let ourselves be stampeded into draconian measures that may or may not have any impact whatsoever on the planetary climate”

So you advocate doing nothing - until we are sure that it will make a positive difference.

Well listen up - there will never be 100% agreement - so if we listen to you we will never do anything to address this or any other problem.

I would rather say:

“far too important to let a few sceptics prevent us from taking the urgent and necessary action which we must be bold enough to take NOW if we are going to be able to be in any way effective in addressing the overwhelmingly PROVEN and crucial problem of climate change.

As for the economy - by leading the world in energy efficient technologies - rather than dragging our feet and arguing inaction - there are huge potential benefits for industry and the economy. f we stay ahead of the game we could maybe even become a manufacturing nation again.

Bob

Actually, if we listen to you then we will be living in an eco-dictatorship.

Let’s take carbon taxes for example…

Just imagine for a minute the kind of bureaucracy it will take to administer such a tax. It would take something as autocratic, corrupt and inefficient as say, erm, the UN or the EU to carry that out. And what a surprise to find that the major “world government” institutions are the most active in pushing this idea.

And what about carbon swaps? Another major boondoggle of the “carbon economy”.

Are these the kinds of “technologies” that you are referring to?

In summary, no, I am not advocating that we do nothing, I am advocating that we immediately stop investing billions of taxpayers money into “climate research”, and put the money into useful, productive industries instead, like space research.

You know, mankind used to believe in the future, now we seem intent on destroying oursevles with pessimism and false, pagan religions like Mr Gore and his ilk are promoting.

Comment by Ryan Lavelle October 15, 2007 @ 9:38 am

Ryan,

And space research is useful and productive? Useful and productive for what may I ask? Star Wars perhaps?

So what we get down to behind all the bluster and analogies with socrates etc is that you do not believe in climate change and since you do not believe in it then nothing should be done about it. And anybody who suggest doing anything about it an eco-fascist.

And I’m an eco dictator because I think that because the majority of experts in the field agree that it is of paramount importance that we should do something about Climate change then we should heed the expert advice and take action.

Yes that really makes sense! I am humbeled by your dazzling logic!
