Plus ça change…

By an extraordinary coincidence, I came across two cartoons today that despite decades between them seemed joined at the hip.  The first (I’m told) has been knocking about on the internet, and is claimed by some to have been “leaked” from a secret archive in the KGB (or whatever initials the Russians are using these days).  Sadly I can’t confirm the provenance, but the style and content (for what they’re worth) seem to add some credibility to the claim.

We’re back in the days of the Molotov/Ribbentrop pact, signed in August 1939 – effectively a non-aggression pact between Hitler and Stalin.  The pact was so successful that it held for nearly two years – until Hitler stabbed his Russian ally in the back and started his ill-fated march to Moscow in 1941.

The cartoon, or propaganda poster (which it appears to be), shows a Russian and a German pilot rather improbably shaking hands in the air, from planes travelling in opposite directions, while German and Russian bombs fall in a steady shower on London.  The Russian text at the bottom (I am reliably informed) celebrates the coming destruction of Britain’s capital city.

Fast forward seven or eight decades to the Adams’ cartoon in the Daily Telegraph of October second.  Again, two planes.  And bombs.  Russia still represented, this time by president Putin, the modern incarnation of the Tsar of all the Russias (or at least one of them).  And in the other plane, the USA, represented by President Obama.  Putin shouts “Bombs away” as his weapon descends onto Obama’s cockpit.

I don’t suggest for a moment that Adams had the Russian cartoon in mind (or was even aware of it), but the parallel is uncanny.

In 2015 as in 1940 we have a shaky sort of alliance between major powers, including Russia.  Again, we have some pretence of cooperation and coordination.  Again, there is deep suspicion and cross purposes.  We have Russia and America, to all appearances, in Syria, fighting different wars against different enemies in the same airspace.  Bizarre.

Karl Marx is credited with the famous quotation “History repeats itself, first as tragedy, then as farce”. There is no doubt that the Second World War was a tragedy.  But this time, despite the humour of Adams’ cartoon, I fear that the situation in Syria is a tragedy too.

  1. The problem with these nations has always been the evil people in charge.

Yes I agree Charles, we can most likely “Get on” with the people of other states, but not the leaders, nor our own in many cases.
Wonder if the eu commizars will adopt the plan in Catch 22, where we each bomb our own forces, to save fuel.

Sooner or later I thought Russia would step in…along with Iran of course. The West will no doubt (and is) left to do a lot of handwringing and like the EU… all too late!

And that Monnet Professor thing…200 of them. Nice work if you can get it!

All wars are choreographed. Stalin was controlled by the cabal (US Ambassador Averill Harriman). Churchill was controlled by the same cabal (Victor Rothschild). Hitler too (Martin Borman). Once you realise wars are made to order by the bankers who fund them you start to understand why the battles never make any sense. Cartoon try to expose some of the events that don’t stack up, but don’t explain it.

Meanwhile Canada is supplying arms to Saudi Arabia who in turn supply arms to ISIS who turn the Canadian arms onto whoever gets in their way in their bid to take over the world. But all is not lost…..Saudi Arabia, who chops off the heads of anyone who dares to question their way of doing things or commits any crime however big or small, is now heading up the UN panel on HUMAN RIGHTS! Really???? Is there nobody in charge anywhere in the world who is not swayed by the big boys with oil or money or both? Whatever happened to honesty, integrity and irony(?) all sacrificed on the alter of greed and destruction. Meanwhile those idiots in Brussels sleep walk into their own destruction by allowing all and sundry across the borders exposing the citizens to the possibility of a civil war. I hope when the brown stuff hits the fan they are in the front line, still believing nothing bad will happen until the reality hits them in the face.

A little off topic Roger but wondered if you have seen this……..I suspect I’m preaching to the choir!

Heath admitted he had lied and misled the people, who have never had the chance to vote on this constitutional change therefore the UK making membership of the EU invalid.

As a matter of interest RT interviewed Jozsef Toth, President of the World Petroleum Council last week:

The question was put about where ISIL sold oil and who to? Toth chuckled…don’t know he said. How does that work?

Bomb them if required…but cut their financing, surely?
